Do you often use the word “no”? “Can’t”?

Did you know that the words you speak help create the world as you experience it?

Words mean things. This isn’t a new thought. That they have power, used correctly, is also known. They have the power to hurt, as we’ve been told since childhood. They have the power to convince. They have the power to inspire, illuminate, educate, persuade, seduce, and hypnotize. They also have the power to create.

The words we habitually speak, think, or both can shape or create our experience of the world around us. Some would say that it’s the other way around, that our experience of the world influences the words we choose to say and think but the new philosophy of Law of Attraction says very empathically that the words we choose to speak or think shape our life. If you find yourself using words like “afraid” or “can’t” and phrases like “I’m sick and tired of… ” or “no way”, look around at your circumstances. There is a good chance that there is much to fear and little accomplishment readily noticeable or obvious.

Phrases like “I’m offended” create the opening for offenses. There will always be circumstances surrounding you that could be interpreted as offensive and if you speak or think “I’m offended” enough, you will train yourself to notice those things and it will at the very least seem like you are attracting them. (Law of Attraction says that you are, indeed, attracting them, not just seem to be.)

However, if you often use words like “positive” and “create”, your mind will look more for possibilities for creation and possibility and your life will become more creative.

It is easy to notice that you are speaking or thinking negative words and phrases, but seems difficult to change. It isn’t that hard, actually. A simply way of transforming your life is to “reframe” your words. When you notice the habitual negative word, stop for a brief moment and substitute a new thought. It is said that “fear” and “excitement” elicit the same physical sensations, that it is only what we choose to call the feeling that makes it one or the other. When fear comes up, decide to reframe it as excitement. Another example, if you often find yourself thinking “I can’t”, when you notice it come up again, reframe it into, “How can I?”

Another way to retrain yourself is to surround yourself with more productive, positive words in your environment. Many people use the Internet for this, often searching for words like “power” or “inspiration” in a search engine to both reinforce the word and to connect with people and sites that share that sensibility.

Become aware of the words that cross your mind, words that you say or think automatically. If they don’t reflect a world you’d like to inhabit, it is time to use other words. You can do it.

Finding concrete examples of Law of Attraction in action can be startlingly easy. We are told that we are always attracting what shows up in our lives, for good or bad, by what we put emotional energy on. It is not, as some people say, what we think about all the time. When we think about attracting more money, for example, what our emotional energy is on is often the lack of money, which tends to perpetuate that lack. That is simplistic, but only given as an example. We all have, to some degree or other, the ability to subtly influence the events around us. Here is an example of that.

My writing partner Steve and I used to play Scrabble a lot. He used to get all the best tiles. In how many games can you get a “J” in the first few rounds, when there is a perfect double or triple letter spot open in two directions? He used to win. A lot. And it pissed me off. Until one day I just said, “You are really good at choosing tiles. Do that in life.”

That startled both of us. Steve likes to win. When playing a competitive game, his emotional energy is very strongly on winning. I’m not saying he used telekinesis or anything, although he may have, who knows. What I am saying is, when he was relaxed and confident and sure he was going to win, without any obvious doubt, he usually did.

Ever since, we often remind each other to “choose a tile” when things get challenging. It is amazing how much you can choose the easiest path by simple declaration. Or, more accurately, be “inspired” to choose a more effective path.

I’ve always said I have great “parking karma” – I always find a parking space. (In Los Angeles, that’s a big deal.) Of course, that’s UNLESS I’m in a foul mood, then I can circle the block for hours until I remember that I have great parking karma and find a space! Someone then, magically, pulls out of a spot right in front of me, and voila! I’m not late for my movie.

In the past, when things have gotten “hairy” Steve and I talked a lot about what wasn’t working, which, using the “choose a tile” metaphor, is like choosing that it doesn’t work. Then we both noticed we were doing this, and started choosing other tiles. Things began to appear. Opportunities. Like magic. They aren’t magic, they just seem that way. They were already there all along, but we started noticing them or remembering them and choosing them. That’s the magic of real magic, it’s not magic at all.

When things don’t seem the way you thought you’d been envisioning, notice where your emotional energy is focused. Acknowledge that, accept it, then, gently and without any judgement of yourself or the previous choices, choose a different tile.
